Before I Decide: For the Woman Thinking Through Motherhood

For a lot of women, motherhood is spoken about as something that will simply happen, not something to decide. The timeline is assumed. The joy is assumed. The yes is assumed. And somewhere in all that assuming, the woman at the centre of it rarely gets asked the one question that matters most: what do you actually want. Before I Decide is a workbook that finally makes room for that question.

A choice that is treated like a given

Having a child is one of the biggest decisions a person can make. Yet for women, it is often not treated as a decision at all. It is treated as the next step, the natural thing, the obvious happy ending to a marriage. The pressure to simply proceed can be so quiet and so constant that you may never have been given the space to stop and ask whether this is what you want, and when, and why. That space is yours to take, and it matters.

The questions you are not supposed to ask out loud

Do I want this. Do I want it now. Am I ready, and what would ready even look like. What will it take from my body, my work, my sense of myself. What am I afraid of, and what am I hoping for. These are honest, important questions, and yet many women feel they are not allowed to ask them, as though wondering means ungratefulness, or doubt means something is wrong with them. Nothing is wrong with you. Thinking carefully about the biggest decision of your life is wisdom, not betrayal.

So much that gets decorated as a blessing

A woman goes through an enormous amount on the way to motherhood, much of it mental and emotional, and much of it unspoken. Too often it all gets wrapped up and handed back to her as a blessing, as though naming the hard parts would be ingratitude. But something can be a blessing and still be heavy. You are allowed to hold both. You are allowed to feel joy and fear, longing and a loss of control, all at once. Before I Decide makes room for the parts that usually go undecorated.

The voices all around the decision

In so many families, the decision does not feel like yours alone. There are in-laws waiting for good news. Relatives who count the months after a wedding. Well-meaning questions at every gathering. A sense that your body and its timing somehow belong to everyone. Part of deciding well is learning to tell your own voice apart from all of theirs, and to notice which hopes are truly yours and which were handed to you. This workbook helps you do exactly that.

Preparing, not just deciding

Deciding is one part. Preparing is another. If and when you move toward motherhood, there is a whole inner readiness that rarely gets attention: your relationship with your own body, your fears, your support, the life you are building and how a child would move through it. Before I Decide holds space for that preparation too, so that whatever you choose, you move into it awake and informed rather than swept along.

Deciding is not the same as being certain

Very few people feel completely certain about a decision this large, and waiting for certainty can keep you stuck. The goal is not to feel no fear. It is to understand your own mind well enough to make a choice you can stand behind, and to be at peace with it. Whatever you decide, to try, to wait, or to choose a different path entirely, you deserve to arrive there as yourself, clear and whole.

What Before I Decide holds

Before I Decide is a workbook for women standing at this threshold. It is a private, unhurried place to sit with the decision about motherhood, to separate your own wants from the world's expectations, to name the feelings that usually go unspoken, and to prepare, inwardly, for whatever comes next. It does not tell you what to choose. It simply makes sure that you, the woman at the centre of it all, finally get to be the one deciding.

How to use it

There is no right pace, and no right answer waiting at the end. You can move through it slowly, return to the pages that stay with you, and keep it entirely to yourself. The prompts are not a test. They are an invitation to be honest with yourself about something you may never have been given permission to think about out loud.

Before I Decide is part of the Hibiscus series of life-stage workbooks, made for the big, quiet, life-shaping moments we rarely get to sit with properly. If you are standing at this one, it was written for you.
