Hyper Independence

Hyper independence is the state of being excessively self-reliant and independent. Hyper independence can be a coping mechanism for people who have experienced past traumas or have a fear of betrayal.



It can also be caused by societal pressure to be independent and self-sufficient. This can manifest in a number of ways, such as:

  • Refusing help or support from others

  • Being reluctant to rely on others

  • Being unwilling to share responsibilities

  • Avoiding close relationships

  • Being excessively self-sufficient

  • Being overly self-reliant

  • Being unwilling to admit vulnerability

  • Being in control of everything

  • Being defensive when someone tries to help

  • Being unwilling to accept help


Hyper independence can develop as a coping mechanism for a variety of reasons. Some possible causes include:

  • Past experiences of betrayal or rejection: If someone has been hurt or let down by others in the past, they may develop a fear of relying on others and instead choose to be self-sufficient.

  • Trauma: Traumatic experiences can lead to feelings of powerlessness and a need to regain control over one's life. This may manifest as an intense focus on self-sufficiency.

  • Perfectionism: Some people may develop hyper-independence as a way to achieve their goals and avoid mistakes by doing everything themselves.

  • Lack of trust: People who lack trust in others may find it difficult to rely on others for help and support.

  • Societal pressure: Our culture often promotes self-sufficiency and individualism, which can contribute to the development of hyper-independence as a coping mechanism.



It's worth noting that Hyper independence also can be a symptom of mental health conditions like Borderline Personality Disorder, Complex PTSD, and some other personality disorders.


It's essential to understand that Hyper independence is not always a negative aspect and can be helpful in some situations, but in the long run, it can be detrimental to our mental and emotional well-being. It's crucial to find a balance between independence and interdependence and seek help when needed
